A dark and heavy bodied coffee with pungent spicy flavours and a beautiful mellow smoothness. Low acidity, heavy full body with strong earthy and spicy notes with aromas of dark chocolate & cinnamon.
Monsoon Malabar is a unique process applied to naturally processed coffee beans. The process involves exposing the coffee beans to the monsoon winds and rain, in large open warehouses for around 3-4 months. This causes the beans to swell and lose their original acidity, which brings out the beans fullest flavours. This results in a heavy bodied coffee which is marvelously mellow, with aromas of chocolate, spices, and nuts and makes a perfect espresso when dark roasted. The coffee is unique to the malabar coast of Karnataka and Kerala and has protected status under India’s Geographical Indications of Goods Act.
This process was discovered around 1840 when coffee was shipped from India to England, this would take around 4-6 months sailing around the Cape of Good Hope. When the beans arrived the colour had changed from a bright green colour to a pale gold, and the coffee’s acidity had been lost with the wind and moisture during the journey resulting in a wonderfully unique coffee.
